Drug Abuse Rising In Borno IDP Camp – NEMA

By Adama Abubakar The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has raised alarm over increasing cases of drug abuse, prostitution, and other social vices in the Muna Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Borno State . During a town hall meeting with over 9,000 households in the camp on Wednesday, NEMA’s North-East Zonal Coordinator, Abdullahi Sirajo, urged parents and community leaders to work with authorities to tackle the growing problem. Sultanate Council Calls for Sighting of Zulki’ida Crescent

This directive was conveyed in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Sambo Junaidu, who also holds the title of Waziri of Sokoto. The statement noted that Sunday corresponds to the 29th day of Shawwal 1446AH, making it the appropriate day to observe the crescent. Muslims are advised to report any sightings to the nearest District or Village Head, who will forward the information to the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar. The Council prayed for divine assistance in fulfilling this religious duty, emphasizing the significance of the moon sighting to the Islamic calendar and religious observances.

Nigeria Records 17 cVPV2 Cases Across Eight States, NPHCDA Intensifies Polio Response

photo credit: the cable By Adama Abubakar A total of 17 circulating variant poliovirus type 2(cVPV2), cases have been recorded across 15 LGAs in eight states, this year, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has said. The executive director of the agency, Dr Muyi Aina, made the disclosure on Tuesday in Abuja during the agency’s first quarter media briefing. He said while Nigeria was declared Wild Polio Virus (WPV) free in 2020, it has, however, since 2021, been contending with the challenge of the cVPV2 – another form of the virus that has mutated over time and started spreading. He said 12 of the 17 cases are Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) cases while five were found in Environmental Sites (ES). The flyover, located at the congested Post Office area, is budgeted at over ₦16 billion, while the 7.1-kilometre road and a six-span bridge along the Tashan Kano-Damboa road cost ₦4 billion, totalling ₦20 billion. Zulum urged the Chinese contractors, Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), to deliver quality work within the 10-month timeline, stating, “Ten months is 10 months; we have paid 50% of the contract amount.
